D&C 88:119 (Mom)

  1. As I looked over this verse the past week I kept seeing the plaque of this scripture that Mom had on the wall in the kitchen by the phone table. Will-didn't you make that for her in scouts or something? Mom and Dad truly did run our house this way. We are lucky we have their example to follow.

The verbs in this verse are important. We need to "organize", "prepare" and "establish". If anything is to ultimately be established and last- it will have to be done in an organized and prepared way.

Next I went to the phrase "house of God". Isn't the temple referred to in that way sometimes. If we do each of the things listed, our homes will become more like the temple and we will be prepared and worthy to go to there.

Then I looked at the order of the words listed. It all begins with prayer- we tell Heavenly Father our problems or concerns, then we invite the Spirit through fasting and receive promptings and impressions. If we act in faith on the communication we receive from the spirit then we are learning. Once we learn the lessons God has in store for us we recognize how glorious Heavenly Father's blessings are and how much He loves us. Then we continue to order and pattern our life according to His principles, making our lives and our homes houses of God. This is the way that our will comes into alignment with the Lord's.

I'd never really seen or noticed how all those flow together before. I learn so much from doing this with you each week. Thank Sunday like gifts on Christmas morning!

  2. I like Jen was impressed with all the action words. A lot of people think just because we go to church, pray and get married in the temple life will be trouble free and they will live happy ever after. This is not the case. We have to do all we can do while relying on Heavenly Father for help. We are here to work out our own salvation.

The words that stuck out to me the most was house of order, If you do not have order in your life you can not do any of the other things. I have seen a lot of people who did a little of a lot of things but never got anything done. When we have a house of order we have time to do all the other things and serve others.

God is a God or Order. He and his doctrines are the same yesterday, today and forever. The creation had to be done in order. We receive our ordinances in order. The temple endowment has to be done in order. The priesthood offices are received in order.

The Church has order. I remember when we were on vacation in Innsbrock, Austria. We were there just for Sunday. The church was all in German but we could tell the songs because we knew the music. We could figure what was going on because all Church sacrament meetings are all run on the same schedule. It just gave me so much comfort knowing that the church was the same anywhere all over the world. I knew I was in the right place at the right time with my family.

When we have things in order then we have time to listen to the spirit and act on promptings that come to use. I do have a testimony that keeping things in order saves time, money, and allows you to be a better servant of our Heavenly Father,

  3. Have you ever wondered what it was like when we lived in "God's house?" Ponder that for a few moments. Maybe even try comparing it with your house. Do you think they are both much alike? "Establish...a house of God." Is that really possible? Maybe there is a formula suggested for doing just that.

Now for one other thought regarding a "house of Good." If Heavenly Father or Christ was to ring your doorbell unannounced would you invite them in? If you did invite them in would you invite them to sit down? Where? Would you invite your kids to sit in the same room with them? Where will they sit? What about the clothes you and your kids have on; are they neat and clean?

I have to tell you that I think your Mother always went the extra mile to have a house of order, and yes, even a house of God. Sure we had our share of busy messy days, but we always had a house I was willing to invite anyone to enter...even the Savior should he decide to drop in.

Order is good and it is also God's way.

    Love you all!
    DAD

  4. "Prepare yourself every needful thing." What is needful? The list is laid before us in the scripture. Prayer, Fasting, Testimony Development, Scripture Study; then His presence will there abide in our homes. Sometimes we think the needful things are the house, the car, the media, and sports that pull us away from what matters most. The balancing game is always in motion.

I may be called an apostate PE teacher because I don't watch sports as much as I used to. I can't remember the last time I sat down and watched a whole game of any sports on TV. It's not that I don't want to, but there are more needful things in front of me. I’m trying to make sure our family understands the needful things. Sure it would be nice to have more money, a bigger house, or play soccer again but it isn’t needful. I may not be perfect at the basic needful things, but I’m trying and it helps me keep things in perspective what really matters. Watching the Walsh family “grow up” has made me realize just how short and precious time goes by. Thanks for going first Jen. Been learning much from your example.

    1. I really like this scripture a lot because it reminds me of preparing my apartment to be a house of order and where the spirit can dwell and it also reminds of preparing myself to enter the temple with the spirit and I am going to issue you challenge this week to make your homes where the spirit can dwell too ! Those are my thoughts for this week !

  6. Emm- I'm glad someone is learning from my mistakes. I even did myself- Bree is different than Brittney because she has seen her sister and parents make choices and the results that have come as they affected the type of person we each are. Hopefully you all can do a better job than me.
